What's New ?
Just got back from a trip to NYC(5/99). The two highlights of my trip involved
live jazz (no surprise there). First, was a set at Knickerbocker Cafe. This
restaurant has been featuring the finest in jazz duos for many years. Micki
decided to surprise good friend Lee Musiker
- jazz piano doesn't get much
better than this. Lee was there with master bassist Jay Leonhart...Lee and
Jay are old music buddies and have a ball whenever they get to play together.
No, Lee isn't a name many jazz followers are familiar with, but they should
be. I originally met Lee back in the early 80's when he was holding down the
piano chair with Buddy Rich's big band. He was a monster back then and as is
the case with those who live and breathe music, his talent has grown
immensely over the years. He is one of Rebecca's musical directors of choice
- for his ability to lead a band and for his true musicality.
My next jazz treat was getting to hear Monty Alexander
and his trio at the
Blue Note. If they are going to be in a club/concert hall near you GET OUT
TO HEAR this exciting trio. Monty had Hasaan Shakur on bass and Troy Davis
on drums. Three musicians working as one. Although you can't help but
compare their musical tightness with that of the Oscar Peterson trio, they
still tell their own personal story of swing and ballad playing.
As always, Micki suggests getting out there and support live jazz. Buying CDs
of your favorite jazz artists is great, but they need the special waves of
love that you can only give 'em when you hear them live.

New York, New York
Micki also encourages jazz fans traveling in the New York-metro area to
tune into 88.3-FM, WBGO and 89.9-FM, WKCR.
Great jazz always featured on these two stations.
