"The Beauty of her Sound"

(From the Mark Murphy Fan Club Newsletter)
By Ron De Armonde

Just this past weekend I drove down to Carmel to the JAZZ STORE, to catch my
favorite, REBECCA PARRIS. She was fantastic to say the least. The room is
real nice, very intimate (70 people). She had Joe Gilman on piano, Scott
Steed on bass, and drummer Eddie Marshall. When Eddie hadn't arrived by the
starting time panic set in, and Rebecca was pacing the floor. They waited
just awhile, and were about to start without him, when Eddie came running in.
Rebecca gave us two memorable sets of standard song; she has such great taste
in music, and obviously enjoys being an entertainer. Prior to the first set,
Rebecca came out to greet me and introduce me to Marla, her recently adopted
daughter. Marla and I have been e-mail friends for awhile so it was fun
meeting her. I had sent Rebecca an e-mail telling her to be sure to sing
"Over The Rainbow" when she came out here. She saved it till the very last
and it was the best version I have ever heard. It's on her "Passionate Fling"
album and was the tune that made me an instant fan of hers. Other highlights
of the evening were "If You Could See Me Now," "Don't Go To Strangers," "You
Go To My Head," "Yesterday I Heard The Rain," and she did do an encore and it
was a Carroll Coates tune, (he had just arrived at the club a few minutes
prior), "London By Night." She could have encored all night as far as I was
concerned. Rebecca made some old songs sound brand new and more beautiful
than ever. She held the audience in awe throughout the entire show. She has
a style that commands attention, but the beauty of her sound and the honesty
of her performance makes you long to hear more! When you hear her you will
know for sure that not all the great jazz singers belong to the past!
